Iron and steel production can be divided into two categories: the long process of "blast furnace-converter" using iron ore as raw material and the short process of electric furnace using scrap as raw material. According to data, short-process steelmaking with electric furnaces can save nearly 60% of energy and reduce pollutants and CO2 emissions by 80%.
"Efforts to improve the level of green and low-carbon development, Hebei Province encourages blast furnace-converter long-process iron and steel enterprises in areas with advantageous conditions such as scrap steel, electricity prices, and markets to transform on the spot, and orderly develop electric furnace short-process steelmaking. Gao Junzhao said that at the same time, Hebei Province will strictly enforce energy efficiency constraints, promote the application of low-carbon cutting-edge technologies such as direct reduced iron, hydrogen smelting, metallurgical slag sensible heat recovery and comprehensive utilization, and accelerate the pace of energy conservation and carbon reduction in the steel industry.
Increase support for green and low-carbon innovation
Different from "carbon metallurgy", which mainly uses fossil energy such as coal as fuel and reducing agent, "hydrogen metallurgy" technology uses hydrogen, which realizes the large-scale substitution of coal and coke in the iron reduction process, and can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 70%.
