In 2023, the oilfield will complete the carbon emission target issued by the headquarters of the petrochemical group, which is 1.5% lower than the energy and environmental responsibility plan of the group company in 2023.

Strengthen system building

On March 14, watching the Hubei Unified Environmental Rights and Interests Trading Platform being unloaded on the computer, Yao Ping, the director of the inspection and testing department of the Jianghan Oilfield Procurement and Service Center and a former oilfield carbon trader, breathed a long sigh of relief.

Yao Ping said: "In the past, carbon trading was completed by Jianghan Oilfield independently, and there was no standardized management system, and the risk of operation was extremely high. Last year, the oilfield formulated and promulgated the "Jianghan Oilfield Carbon Emission Management Measures", clarifying the specific process of carbon trading, requiring the oilfield safety and environmental protection department and the secondary units involved in carbon trading to sign an agreement with a carbon science company with professional carbon trading qualifications, authorizing it to carry out carbon trading as an agent, and strengthening carbon emissions and carbon asset management, the risk of their own worries was lifted. ”

In order to complete the carbon emission target of Sinopec Corporation, Jianghan Oilfield has strengthened institutional construction and established institutional guarantee for carbon reduction in the past year.

Revised, improved and promulgated the Measures for the Management of Carbon Emissions in Jianghan Oilfield, established basic management systems such as carbon emission accounting, and strengthened the management of carbon emissions in all links. At the same time, a system is formulated to ensure the accuracy of carbon emission data.

Oilfield environmental protection experts said: "After the oilfield started carbon emission reduction work in 2013, it was necessary to map and determine the total amount of carbon emission equipment and the corresponding emission quota of each unit, and establish a ledger for the record. With the reform of the oilfield and the adjustment of units, many equipment is replaced or discarded, such as the carbon emission data of the equipment recorded in the past ledger, which will be extremely inaccurate. Last year, the oilfield introduced a random inspection of carbon data ledger and an online document review system, requiring all units in the oilfield to fill in updated data every month and review it regularly to ensure the accuracy of the data."

In the past year, a total of carbon-related systems have been introduced to establish institutional guarantees for carbon reduction.

Promote energy conservation and carbon reduction

On March 13, Xue Shenglin, a technician from the Wangchang Joint Station of Jianghan Oil Production Plant in Jianghan Oilfield, assisted the employees on duty to maintain the No. 1 heat pump. He said: "In the past, we used to heat gas stoves, and we consumed 500 cubic meters of natural gas per day, which was not conducive to carbon emission reduction. Since the heat pump was put into operation at the end of last year, we have switched to green electricity produced by our photovoltaic equipment, which has a good heating effect, reducing carbon emissions and ensuring the smooth operation of crude oil export. ”

Since last year, the oilfield has built two carbon neutrality demonstration projects in the Wangchang joint station of Jianghan Oil Production Plant and Wang 4-9-8 carbon neutral well site, of which the carbon neutrality project of Wangchang joint station adopts the mode of "waste heat utilization + green electricity" to replace the existing heating furnace and production electricity, which is expected to generate 286,000 cubic meters of gas, consume 1 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity, and reduce carbon emissions by 953 tons; 65.6 tonnes to achieve carbon neutrality at the well site.

For more than a year, oilfields have been reducing carbon emissions by reducing coal and electricity use and methane emissions, and replacing them with new energy sources.

"Oilfield production equipment often uses coal as fuel, or the electricity of coal-fired thermal power stations is used as power, coal combustion will release a large amount of carbon dioxide, gas field development natural gas contains a lot of methane, carbon dioxide and methane are greenhouse gases, are the goal of oilfield carbon reduction. Oilfield environmental protection experts said.

In order to control the use of coal and electricity, carry out energy conservation and consumption reduction, implement the "energy efficiency improvement" project plan of the oilfield, and implement 5 projects around the improvement of ground quality and efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 28,000 tons in 2023, and create an efficiency of 12.96 million yuan. In order to control methane emissions, a total of 2 methane escape tests were carried out, and 12.83 million cubic meters of methane were recovered. In order to develop new energy to replace ore energy and achieve the purpose of carbon reduction, we will promote photovoltaic and wind power generation business. In 2023, 14.35 MW of new PV capacity will be built, with a total installed PV capacity of 83.5 MW, and a cumulative annual power generation of 90.56 million kWh, all of which will be consumed and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 51,600 tons.

Achieve efficiency enhancement of carbon assets

"In recent years, we have strengthened the management of carbon assets, continued to reduce carbon emissions, and achieved a surplus of carbon emission allowances, and the surplus carbon emissions can be used as assets to achieve efficiency improvement. On March 11, Yang Sen, deputy director of the thermal power operation department of Jianghan Salt Chemical Industry, said.

In 2021, the national carbon market was officially launched, and carbon emission rights became a new type of asset - carbon assets. Every year, the state verifies the greenhouse gas emissions of relevant enterprises in the previous year, and according to the verification results, the carbon allowance is issued in the form of "post-allocation". "When a company's actual emissions exceed its allowances, they need to buy additional allowances from the market, and if they emit less than the allowances they have, then the remaining allowances can be sold on the carbon market for profit," Janssen said. "From 2021 to 2022, Jianghan Salt Chemical Thermal Power Plant will have a surplus of 32,500 tons of carbon emission allowances, reducing costs and increasing efficiency.

For more than a year, the oilfield has actively used carbon assets to increase efficiency and maximize the value of carbon assets.

In 2023, the Chongqing municipal government asked Jianghan Oilfield Fuling Shale Gas Company to use the "historical intensity reduction method" to approve carbon quotas, and estimated that its carbon emissions in 2021 and 2022 exceeded the standard of 176,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, and it would need to spend about 5 million yuan to purchase an additional quota of 176,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent from the market to fill the excess quota.

Li Changhua, an expert in power engineering at Fuling Shale Gas Company, said: "The use of the historical intensity decline method to approve carbon quotas requires enterprises to reduce their carbon emission intensity every year, but the natural decline rate of Fuling shale gas production has been high in recent years, and pressurized mining has led to an increase in electricity consumption and an increase in carbon emissions, and the carbon quota will exceed the approved carbon quota for a long time, and additional quotas need to be purchased from the market, resulting in an increase in production costs, which is not conducive to the development of the shale gas industry." "Since 2023, Jianghan Oilfield has negotiated with Chongqing Municipality, and in November 2023, Chongqing Municipality agreed to adjust the calculation method of carbon quotas in the shale gas extraction industry from the "historical intensity decline method" to the "equal amount method".

"Using the equivalent method to verify carbon quotas, that is, the actual annual carbon emissions of enterprises are verified as carbon quotas, Fuling Company's carbon emissions will not exceed the standard, and there is no need to buy additional quotas from the market, which can save about 5 million yuan in production costs, which is conducive to the steady development of the shale gas industry. Li Changhua said.

Over the past year, the oilfield has achieved a surplus of 32,500 tons of carbon emission allowances and an efficiency increase of 1.32 million yuan.
