On June 26, at the World Economic Forum's 15th Annual Meeting of the New Champions (Summer Davos Forum), the establishment of the Global Lu Zhu Carbon Net Zero Industry Alliance was announced. The alliance is composed of more than 300 experts, scholars, and business people from more than 10 countries including China, the United States, and Japan. The alliance proposes to increase research and planting of reed bamboo to help achieve the goal of carbon neutrality.
It is understood that Arundo is an ancient plant distributed in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions around the world. Arundo cultivation in China is mainly distributed in East China, Southwest and South China. The root system of Arundo is a developed fibrous root system and is mostly distributed in medium and shallow soil layers. It can hold the soil well and has good water and soil conservation capabilities, which helps to improve soil structure and improve soil fertility. In addition, Arundo has resistance to pollution, tolerance to moderate to severe salt-alkali, drought and waterlogging, enrichment of heavy metals, and nitrogen fixation of the roots, making Arundo can be planted in large areas of marginal land such as wasteland, mountainous areas, mines, deserts, tidal flats, and saline-alkali lands. While not occupying scarce cultivated land resources, it can also be used for soil remediation, saline-alkali land improvement, desertification control, mine restoration, etc., and plays an important role in the prevention and control of soil secondary salinization risks. In addition, reed bamboo is widely used and can be used in combustion, power generation, chemicals, fertilizers, plates, biofibers, pulp, green methanol, green aviation coal, etc.
"In the past ten years, our team has cooperated in depth with relevant companies in Tianjin City to cultivate a super energy plant-polyploid Arundo. It has strong environmental adaptability and can grow rapidly on saline-alkali land and contaminated soil. The average dry biomass per mu is 5 tons-10 tons, and fixed carbon dioxide is 7 tons-15 tons. The combustion value of its biological particles is similar to that of coal. Currently, more than 1000 acres of saline-alkali land restoration demonstration projects have been established in Tianjin, and good practical results have been achieved.”Song Youtao, one of the initiators of the alliance and academic dean of the School of Oceans and Environment of Tianjin University of Science and Technology, introduced that at the Summer Davos Forum, he launched an initiative to establish the "Global Lu Zhu Carbon Net Zero Industry Alliance", hoping to integrate the entire industry chain and resources from all walks of life such as politics, industry, academia and finance have developed a set of nature-based carbon net zero emission entire industry chain solutions, forming a diversified synergy of the entire chain of "carbon fixation, carbon storage, carbon conversion, and carbon trading". A "new energy model" that integrates development, and plans to promote this model in China and the world to enhance climate change adaptability and promote the realization of China's dual carbon goals and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In addition, this is also an important case of realizing the value of ecological products and a strong growth point for the development of green economy in the future.
