The first cold wave in 2024 is coming, and many places in the south will start blizzard mode. Affected by this round of cold wave, the temperature in Jiangnan, South China and other places hit a new low since winter.

Many southern friends are also unable to withstand the extreme cold, and all kinds of heating methods are arranged, such as heaters, air conditioners, electric blankets, electric fireboxes, baseboard heaters, and warm babies...... All kinds of artifacts have their own magical powers.

But behind the various heating methods, there are also various risks. On the one hand, the quality of heating equipment is uneven, and potential safety hazards should not be underestimated. Heating equipment, if used improperly, can cause safety risks such as fires. On January 19, a fire broke out in a dormitory of the Yanshanpu Community Branch of the Elite School in Dushu Town, Nanyang, Henan Province, killing 13 people. On February 22, 2022, a newlywed couple in Yanhe County, Guizhou Province, died of carbon monoxide poisoning after placing a charcoal fire in their wedding room to keep warm due to cold weather. Accidents caused by heating are cause for vigilance.

On the other hand, the use of household heating equipment has caused the electricity consumption in the southern region to continue to rise, and the pressure on energy supply has been increasing. Li Chao, spokesman of the National Development and Reform Commission, said that on December 17, 2023, the country's highest electricity load was 1.242 billion kilowatts and gas consumption was 1.423 billion cubic meters, which were 83 million kilowatts and 108 million cubic meters higher than the peak of the heating season in the previous year, respectively, setting a record high in the heating season. Some provinces in East China, Southwest China, and South China are under greater pressure to ensure supply.

Although the temperature in the southern part of China is slightly higher than that in the north, due to the high humidity, people's physical temperature will be lower. Affected by climate change and the El Niño phenomenon, extreme weather such as cold waves, heavy snowfall, and freezing rain will become more frequent, and extreme cold weather will be more likely in the southern region. With the continuous development of China's economy and society, the demand for warm winter is also stronger in the southern partners. In the author's opinion, we can gradually promote centralized clean heating in the southern region.

Compared with decentralized heating, central heating is safer and more energy-saving. In recent years, in order to improve the happiness of the people's lives, Yangzhou has accelerated the promotion of central heating, and some new residential buildings have been planned with natural gas collective heating devices at the early stage of construction. It is estimated that compared with the user's self-construction and self-use, the construction and use cost of natural gas central heating will be reduced by more than 30%.

Some people believe that central heating is an important cause of air pollution and carbon emissions, and the promotion of central heating in the southern region is bound to increase energy consumption and carbon emissions. The author does not think so, but now with the progress of science and technology, there is no contradiction between carbon reduction and pollution reduction and warm winter.

In the "2021 Energy Work Guidance", the National Energy Administration proposed to study and explore clean heating in the southern region, and encourage the development of clean heating in a market-oriented manner in the Yangtze River basin and developed areas in the south, and cultivate product manufacturing and service enterprises. In recent years, many places in the south have explored clean heating methods to improve people's quality of life.

Recently, the elderly in Zhongda Langyi (Haiyan) Elderly Care Service Center in Haiyan County, Zhejiang Province ushered in central heating. Relying on the advantages of Qinshan Nuclear Power Group, Haiyan County, Jiaxing has established a nuclear energy heating demonstration project to explore a new way of nuclear energy heating in southern China. After switching to nuclear energy for heating, not only the overall heating supply is more stable, but also saves 2.5 million yuan in costs, and carbon emissions can also be reduced by more than 6,000 tons. Nuclear energy heating has achieved a win-win situation of heating up the happiness of residents, reducing the cost of enterprise production, and adding greenery to the ecological environment.

Nowadays, many places have begun to promote waste heat heating. Wuhan does not belong to the mandatory central heating area, but the summer is hot and the winter is cold, and central heating is the expectation of Wuhan citizens for many years. Wuhan has developed industry, Qingshan Thermal Power Plant, Wuhan Iron and Steel Power Plant, and Wuhan Iron and Steel Plant can provide a large amount of available cogeneration heat and industrial waste heat.

Compared to the north, with the advancement of technology, there are more clean heating methods in the south. Guiyang Zhongtian Future Ark Project is one of the first eight green ecological demonstration urban areas in China by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. The Future Ark Project is located in the lower reaches of the Nanming River, the mother river of Guiyang City, relying on this advantage, the introduction of the river water/sewage source heat pump combined cooling and heating project to make the river water passing through the city into a "green air conditioner", which not only realizes the purpose of heating in winter and cooling in summer, but also realizes the hierarchical and qualitative utilization of water resources. In the southern region, where the surface water system is abundant, there is great potential for extracting heat sources from river water and sewage for heating.

In addition to nuclear power heating, waste heat heating, photovoltaic heating, wind energy heating has also been piloted in some places, and good results have been achieved. As long as we keep the needs of the people in mind, there are always more solutions than difficulties. All localities should explore various clean central heating methods, so that more people can spend the winter warmly under the blue sky.
