        On the morning of November 18, the groundbreaking ceremony of the pile foundation of Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Co., Ltd.'s thermal power unit cleaning and efficiency improvement project was held, marking the implementation of the national "double carbon" goal, the in-depth implementation of the "14th Five-Year Plan" for Shanghai's energy development, and the continuous promotion of energy conservation and carbon reduction, which has started a new journey to ensure the stability of energy supply.

        After the completion of the clean and efficient renovation project of Shanghai Petrochemical Thermal Power Units, it will comprehensively improve the production technology and operation and management level of the thermal power department, greatly reduce coal consumption, energy consumption, air pollutant emissions and carbon emissions, improve the surrounding environment, improve the stability and safety of power supply to the surrounding residential areas, and at the same time provide heat to the Carbon Valley Green Bay Industrial Park to help local economic development.

01Why was this project built?

        Since the construction of the project in the 70s of the last century, Shanghai Petrochemical has been supporting the construction of thermal power plants, with a total evaporation capacity of 2,880 tons per hour and a total installed capacity of 425 megawatts. However, due to the design life and energy consumption index factors, it does not meet the requirements of sustainable economic operation, energy conservation and emission reduction. In accordance with the "14th Five-Year Plan for Energy Development in Shanghai" and Sinopec's requirements of "steadily reducing the total consumption of thermal coal, optimizing and adjusting the energy consumption structure of enterprise-owned power plants, and implementing low-carbon operation control of self-supplied power plants", Shanghai Petrochemical has decided to implement a clean and efficient transformation project for self-supplied power plants.


02What is the main content of the project construction?

        The total investment of the project is 3.75 billion yuan, and four sets of 70 MW coal-fired heating units with high efficiency and low consumption advantages and two 260 t/h gas boilers with clean fuel and low nitrogen combustion technology will be built, and related supporting facilities will be built.


03What are the benefits of the project after completion?

        The project is planned to be fully completed in the first half of 2026, and after it is put into operation, the annual power generation capacity will be 2.2 billion kilowatt hours, the heat supply will be 31 million gigajoules, and the original "7 furnaces and 7 machines" active units will be decommissioned one after another. Compared with the existing units, the energy efficiency of the new units can be improved from 60% to 87.8% due to the adoption of the best international design scheme, and the total annual carbon emissions will be reduced by 1.1 million tons, which is equivalent to planting about 60 million trees.


04What are the advantages of project construction?

        The project adopts the best design scheme in the world, not only the environmental protection index is at the world's leading level, but also the energy efficiency of the unit has been increased from the current 60% to 87.8%, which not only fully meets the power and steam energy guarantee of Shanghai Petrochemical, but also takes into account the heating demand in the Green Bay Industrial Park of Jinshan District, improves the regional power layout, improves the economy and reliability of power grid operation, and further promotes the integration of enterprises, real estate and cities, and green and low-carbon development.
