On the morning of December 22, 2023, the Metallurgical Industry Planning and Research Institute released a number of research results such as the 2023 ESG rating of Chinese iron and steel enterprises in Beijing. This is the first ESG rating issued specifically for the steel industry in China.
According to reports, the objects participating in the ESG rating of iron and steel enterprises include various domestic iron and steel enterprises that have issued ESG reports, social responsibility reports or sustainable development reports. According to statistics, a total of 84 iron and steel enterprises have entered the scope of this evaluation, and the total crude steel output accounts for about 73.1% of the country's total output.
According to the rating results, among the 84 iron and steel enterprises, there are 19 iron and steel enterprises rated AAA and AA, accounting for 22.6% of the total number of evaluated iron and steel enterprises, and the total crude steel output accounts for 36.9% of the total national output, of which: 9 steel enterprises with ESG rating AAA, accounting for 10.7% of the total number of evaluated iron and steel enterprises, and the total crude steel output accounts for 22.4% of the total national output; There are 10 steel companies with an ESG rating of AA, accounting for 11.9% of the total number of evaluated steel enterprises, and the total crude steel output accounts for 14.5% of the country's total output.

“近年来，以可持续发展与环境、社会和治理（ESG）为代表的绿色低碳发展理念已得到全会的广泛关注和重视。据不完全统计，当前全球已有超过600机构开展企业ESG评级工作；但采用国际通用评价规则，往往针对性和适用性不强，导致不同机构对同一行业同一企业的ESG rating results相差较大。”冶金工业规划研究院副院长肖邦国介绍，钢铁行业工艺流程长、专业性强，在各机构评级指标体系中并未体现钢铁行业的特点。为此，冶金工业规划研究院牵头组织钢铁企业、大学和研究机构、评级机构制定铁企业ESG评价标准，并以此为依据开展钢铁行业企业的评级工作，以真实反映钢铁企业ESG水平。
It is understood that the rating adopts the "Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Part 2: Evaluation Requirements for Iron and Steel Enterprises" (T/SSEA 0266.2-2023), and the standard covers a total of 85 indicators in three categories: environmental, social and governance, and 42 indicators reflect the characteristics of the steel industry. For example, water resource consumption, raw fuel consumption, energy consumption, carbon emission action plan, low-carbon metallurgical process technology innovation, air pollutant emissions and other indicators are selected to highlight the important contributions and great progress made by iron and steel enterprises in environmental protection and ultra-low emissions, extreme energy efficiency and water efficiency leadership, and low-carbon development; Select indicators such as product service guarantee, variety and quality improvement, customer rights and interests protection, green supply chain management, production process equipment and innovation achievements.
"Nearly 50% of the indicators of the ESG evaluation index system of iron and steel enterprises can reflect the characteristics of the iron and steel industry, which can truly reflect the remarkable achievements of iron and steel enterprises in variety development, quality control and brand building, upstream and downstream coordinated development and service innovation, large-scale and intelligent production equipment, and at the same time truly reflect the great progress of iron and steel enterprises in green, low-carbon, intelligent and other aspects in recent years."
