"In the past ten years, Beijing's carbon dioxide emissions per 10,000 yuan of GDP have dropped by nearly 50%, and the total carbon emissions have dropped significantly, and it is currently in a stable plateau. At the same time, a historic breakthrough has been made in the improvement of ecological environment quality, with the annual average concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) dropping by 66.5%. Recently, at the first local side event held in the "China Corner" of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), Chen Tian, director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment, delivered a keynote speech on the achievements of the construction of a green Beijing in the new era.
Chen Tian said that in the process of addressing climate change, cities are not only a key node in the impact of climate change risks, but also an important part of the solution to climate change. In order to actively respond to climate change and accelerate the improvement of air quality, Beijing has formulated and implemented the "Green Beijing" development strategy, especially to promote pollution reduction and carbon reduction, while carbon emissions have been greatly reduced, the quality of the ecological environment has also been significantly improved, and the city's sustainable development capacity has been significantly enhanced.
With the theme of "Beijing's Actions and Achievements in Responding to Climate Change and Reducing Pollution and Carbon Emissions", the side event shared Beijing's measures and achievements in pollution prevention and control and actively responding to climate change, displayed excellent typical cases, demonstrated the high-quality development of the capital city, and provided a model for super-large cities to implement the "dual carbon" strategy and green and low-carbon development. Representatives of international organizations, Chinese and foreign local governments, universities and research institutions, and NGOs were invited to participate in the side event.
In the panel discussion, experts from the Beijing Municipal Center for Climate Change Management, Beijing Drainage Group, Zhonghe Xinxing (Beijing) Energy Science and Technology Research Institute, Goldwind and other units discussed hot issues such as the construction of Beijing's carbon market, low-carbon advanced technology innovation, hydrogen and wind power development, and green and low-carbon actions of enterprises.
