Chinanews.comTianjin, March 14 (Sun Lingling, Zhang Hua) The reporter learned from Tianjin University that recently, the Jinchao team of Tianjin University, together with a number of well-known research institutions at home and abroad, proposed a development path for global cooling to reduce the dependence on carbon dioxide removal technology (referred to as carbon removal) as much as possible. The research has been published in Environmental Science and Technology, a top international journal in the field of environment, and was selected as the cover article of the current issue.

It is understood that a large amount of carbon dioxide emissions is one of the important factors causing global warming. Carbon removal is an important measure to reduce global carbon emissions and cool the planet. The study found that over-reliance on carbon removal poses a number of potential risks to humans, including delayed emission reductions in high-carbon emitting industries, lock-in effects caused by continued use of fossil fuel infrastructure, and the large use of existing arable land and pasture resources for carbon reduction.

According to Jin Chao, at the current rate of emissions, the temperature rise by 2100 will not exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius, and the remaining carbon budget may be exhausted in the next five years. This requires a rapid increase in the global energy supply of renewables and nuclear energy. According to the study, the use of fossil fuels will be significantly reduced under the low-carbon removal dependency, which in turn will reduce pollutant emissions, and the study predicts that by 2050, renewable energy and nuclear energy will reach more than 90% of the total electricity generation under the low-carbon removal dependence.

According to reports, the research work provides strong evidence for the minimum use of carbon removal technology to achieve global carbon reduction development goals, and the study shows that mankind now urgently needs to adopt renewable energy, electrification, carbon-neutral fuels, reduce energy consumption and other measures to reduce carbon, rather than betting on uncertain future carbon removal technology to achieve large-scale carbon reduction.
