According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, China's automobile production and sales will hit a record high in 2023, both exceeding 30 million units, an increase of 11.6% and 12.0% year-on-year, respectively. During the same period, China's automobile exports reached 4.91 million, which is expected to surpass Japan to become the world's largest automobile exporter. New energy vehicles maintained a booming momentum of production and sales, with production and sales reaching 9.587 million and 9.495 million respectively, with a market share of 31.6%. New energy vehicles have become an important growth point of China's automobile industry, and the export driving role is obvious. The brand image and premium ability of such cars are also constantly improving, and a number of smart electric vehicle products with novel and fashionable appearance are favored by more and more overseas consumers. It is not difficult to find that new energy vehicles have become the core competitiveness of China's march towards an automobile power. This is due to China's long-term and continuous investment in related industries, as well as the whole chain management of the new energy vehicle supply chain.

Since the implementation of the "10 cities and 1,000 vehicles" pilot project in 2009, China has introduced a package of policies to support and promote the development of the new energy vehicle industry, with a total of more than 150 billion yuan of subsidies for new energy vehicles, formulated a phased new energy vehicle industry development plan, implemented preferential tax policies such as purchase tax exemption and vehicle and vessel tax, cultivated a world's largest new energy vehicle market, and cultivated a large number of new energy vehicle enterprises. In the field of new energy vehicles, China has established a complete industrial chain system from key materials, core components to vehicles, to infrastructure, manufacturing equipment and recycling, taking the lead in achieving large-scale development and continuously improving its global competitiveness. The integrity of the intelligent network industry chain is leading in the world, and the scale of China's new energy vehicle market is huge, and the product cost performance advantage is obvious.

It can be seen that China has achieved a competitive advantage in the key links of the new energy vehicle supply chain. China has applied for 74% of the world's power battery patents, leading the world in battery technology, accounting for two-thirds of the world's battery production, and its inherent supply chain advantages have reduced logistics, labor and land management costs. The huge EV market allows for economies of scale and has the world's largest network of charging infrastructure.

In the future, to better develop new energy vehicles, it is necessary to take multiple measures at the same time, consolidate the foundation of the industrial chain and supply chain, ensure the security of key core technologies and resource supply, reduce the carbon footprint of products, improve carbon productivity, and continue to enhance the competitiveness of new energy vehicles.

On the one hand, continue to encourage policies and measures to develop "battery life" for new energy vehicles. Relevant departments have made it clear that they will continue and optimize the vehicle purchase tax reduction and exemption policy for new energy vehicles, promote automobile consumption, and consolidate and expand the development advantages of China's new energy vehicle industry. In this regard, we should focus on small and medium-sized cities and villages, accelerate the construction of charging piles and urban parking facilities, encourage automobile companies to develop models more suitable for use in county and rural areas, and vigorously promote new energy vehicles to the countryside. On the basis of comprehensive planning and active layout, we should actively respond to the technology and trade barriers made by developed countries, and make plans in advance to avoid impact.

On the other hand, we should break through the core technology, strengthen the resource guarantee, and prevent new energy vehicles from encountering the problem of "stuck neck". Accelerate the research and ecological cultivation of core technologies such as vehicle-grade chips and on-board operating systems, and contribute to the development of the industry. Solve the problem of excessive dependence on foreign resources such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and other resources required for new energy vehicles, and establish a reserve mechanism and related pricing mechanism for new energy minerals. At the same time, in the context of the global response to climate change, all countries attach great importance to carbon dioxide emission reduction and carbon productivity improvement. With the development of vehicle electrification, the carbon emissions of vehicle models will gradually shift from the fuel cycle to the vehicle production cycle. In the future, it is necessary to continue to reduce the carbon footprint of new energy vehicles, enhance the low-carbon competitiveness of the industry, improve energy efficiency and reduce material carbon emissions as the main path, promote the green and low-carbon upgrading of the automobile industry, and continue to improve the carbon productivity of the automobile industry.
