Shanghai, 19 Oct (Xinhua) -- From the release of the "Outline of the Implementation Plan of the Shanghai Port-Los Angeles Port Green Shipping Corridor" in Shanghai on September 22 to the conclusion of the work exchange meeting on the joint construction of the "Shanghai Port-Los Angeles Port Green Shipping Corridor" in Los Angeles on October 16... The development path of the "Shanghai Port-Los Angeles Port Green Shipping Corridor" has been further clarified. The reporter recently came to the Shanghai Port Yangshan Phase IV Automated Terminal to visit the relevant work.

"Promoting the green transformation of the shipping industry is the common development vision of all parties in the industry, and the Port of Shanghai and the Port of Los Angeles have reached a consensus on this." Jing Yan, Director of the Shipping Division of the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission, introduced that from 2025, shipping company partners will deploy ships with full-life low-carbon or full-life zero-carbon emission capabilities in the "Shanghai Port-Los Angeles Port Green Shipping Corridor". By 2030, the corridor will demonstrate the viability of the world's first full-lifecycle zero-carbon container ship (or fleet).

The reporter saw in the Yangshan Phase IV automated terminal of Shanghai Port that SIPG Group has basically completed the work of oil to electricity and oil to gas by improving the layout of low-carbon facilities, expanding the application of new energy in the port, and updating and transforming port machinery equipment, and has made significant progress in traditional terminal transformation, shore-based power supply, and photovoltaic power generation in the port area.

Luo Wenbin, general manager of the engineering equipment department of SIPG, said that under the condition of continuous increase in total throughput, the total carbon emissions of Shanghai Port Container Terminal fell from 440,000 tons in 2020 to 326,000 tons in 2022, and the emission intensity of carbon dioxide decreased from 10.1 kg per TEU in 2020 to 6.9 kg in 2022.

In recent years, SIPG has continuously expanded its clean energy bunkering services, carried out a series of practices in LNG fuel bunkering, and is promoting green methanol fuel bunkering next year. The Port of Shanghai and the Port of Los Angeles have reached a number of consensuses to promote cooperation in the pilot application of marine new energy fuels such as green methanol, the use of shore power for ships, and the construction of smart terminals.

At the 35th Shanghai Mayor International Entrepreneur Advisory Conference held recently, Robert Maersk Ugra, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Maersk, believes that Shanghai is expected to become the world's leading green shipping center. The Shanghai-Los Angeles route is one of the most dynamic shipping routes in the world, with more than 1.3 million TEUs in 2022. "We strive to promote this trans-Pacific green shipping corridor and become a model of global cooperation for green, low-carbon and sustainable development of the shipping industry." Jing Yan said.
