Xiamen completed the country's first garbage classification carbon emission reduction trading project
Yesterday (January 18), the country's first garbage classification carbon emission reduction trading project landed in Huli District, Xiamen, and a total of 10,168 tons of carbon emission reductions from domestic waste in Jin'an Community, Jinshan Street, were traded on site. This transaction is an important exploration of the community as the main body of carbon inclusion in waste classification, marking that Xiamen continues to be at the forefront of the country in the field of waste classification and carbon emission reduction.
Dr. Ye Zhilong, from the Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced that the calculation of this carbon emission reduction transaction is based on the "Carbon Emission Methodology for the Four Classifications of Domestic Waste in Residential Communities" developed by the Institute, which focuses on the source classification and accurate delivery of domestic waste, and calculates the carbon emission reductions generated by the residential community after the implementation of the four classification of domestic waste. "For example, recycling 1 kilogram of offset printing paper can reduce CO2 emissions by 0.824 kilograms. He said.
To name a few scenarios, we can more intuitively understand the help of garbage classification in carbon emission reduction: recyclables can be regenerated and recycled, reducing the generation of garbage from the source, and other garbage is finely sorted, the calorific value of incineration is significantly increased, and the power generation efficiency is further improved...... Since 2017, residents of Jin'an Community have classified a total of 72,065.6 tons of domestic waste from recyclables, kitchen waste, hazardous waste, and other waste, achieving carbon emission reduction of 10,168 tons.
These "carbon assets" can obtain corresponding financial returns. Ye Zhilong introduced that through the "classification of domestic waste, collection, transfer, disposal, utilization" and other behaviors, the reduced carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions are accounted for and identified by a third-party authority, and can be traded through a professional platform.
The carbon trading, jointly initiated by the Office of the Leading Group for Domestic Waste Classification in Xiamen, Jinshan Street in Huli District, and the Institute of Urban Environment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was successfully completed through the Xiamen Property Rights Trading Center (Xiamen Carbon and Emission Rights Trading Center), opening a new model of "promoting community waste classification through green trading" in Xiamen. The proceeds of this transaction will be invested in the environmental protection action of Jin'an community, encouraging residents to continue to participate in garbage sorting and forming a virtuous circle.
