I want to raise two questions. One is how can we tap and enhance the carbon sink potential of agricultural and forestry residues? Second, what policies need to be formulated to accelerate the development of this industry?

answer

Wu Yiqiang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Secretary of the Party Committee of Central South University of Forestry and Technology

In response to the first question, my country's agricultural and forestry biomass is huge, and there are many discussions on the utilization of agricultural and forestry biomass, such as material application and agricultural utilization. Especially in terms of material utilization, agricultural and forestry biomass currently has broad application prospects, such as green home improvement materials. To accelerate the utilization of agricultural and forestry biomass, we must first accelerate technological innovation and develop products into green, high-end, and intelligent industries; secondly, compared with other industries such as steel, cement, and plastics, agricultural and forestry biomass itself is relatively low-carbon in the production and processing process. Therefore, it is necessary to vigorously strengthen the development of the industry and promote its application market in the fields of home decoration and construction. At the same time, it is necessary to strengthen research on greenhouse gas emission reduction methodologies for agricultural and forestry biomass household materials to better serve the high-quality utilization of agricultural and forestry biomass.

In response to the second question, I believe that the state should issue relevant policies and documents to increase support for the development of high value-added agricultural and forestry biomass products, especially the green home furnishing industry. Secondly, accelerate the integration of the agricultural and forestry biomass materials industry into the carbon emissions trading market. For example, the proposal put forward at this year's Two Sessions to include the "Emission Reduction Methodology for Biomass Waste Substituting Wood to Produce Wood-based Panels Project" into the National Certified Voluntary Emission Reduction (CCER) mechanism. This is a good mechanism and method. According to this methodological calculation, my country's wood-based panel industry is entirely manufactured from agricultural and forestry biomass, which can reduce carbon emissions by about 270 million tons per year. Furthermore, accelerate the development of agricultural and forestry biomass green furniture materials in terms of scientific and technological innovation, talent team training, and carbon sink innovation platforms to better promote the green, low-carbon and high-quality development of farmland biomass.
