At the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, a World Bank-run fund was launched to help developing countries and their state-owned oil companies reduce methane emissions. The initial allocation for the initiative is US$255 million, with US$25 million each from six global oil companies – Shell, Total, BP and Occidental Petroleum – and US$100 million from the United Arab Emirates, which is hosting COP28. Chevron and ExxonMobil did not join.
