The Shanghai North Bund International Shipping Green Development Community was recently established, and the North Bund International Shipping Green Development Base was unveiled at the same time. This marks the beginning of the prototype of the green shipping industry ecosystem in Hongkou District, Shanghai, which will promote the complementary advantages, resource sharing and win-win cooperation of all links in the industrial chain in the region.
At present, 3% of global carbon dioxide emissions are generated by the shipping industry, which is also in an important position to combat climate change and carry out decarbonization and emission reduction. According to the greenhouse gas reduction strategy proposed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), IMO member countries will achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions around 2050. In line with the requirements of the construction of Shanghai International Shipping Center, Hongkou District will strive to give full play to the advantages of the North Bund shipping industry, extend the chain and upgrade in green energy investment and sales, testing and certification and other professional services, and green transformation of ships, so as to form a new growth pole and create a new benchmark for green and low-carbon demonstration highlands.
According to Liu Yang, chief representative of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) China Office and Shanghai Representative Office, the current cost of alternative fuels is at least two to three times that of traditional ship fuels, which requires the global shipping industry to form a "holistic approach", and the community will better promote cooperation at all ends of the industrial chain to forge a path to a zero-carbon future. Liang Yanfeng, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industries, said that the use of alternative fuels for ships is the most thorough response to the decarbonization of the shipping industry. He suggested that relying on the platform of the community, a development framework of "co-construction and co-management, win-win co-creation, and win-win sharing" should be established, and long-term cross-industry cooperation and collaboration should be carried out in the manufacturing of green intelligent ships and carbon reduction equipment, the development and application of green and low-carbon fuels and new energy technologies, as well as the testing standards and certification of green fuel production, and green financial support, so as to jointly enhance the influence of green shipping in China.
According to reports, Hongkou District will build a platform for participants to cooperate and exchange, encourage participants to carry out exchanges and discussions, and promote the formulation of industry rules; support all parties in the market to speak together around green shipping, form an influential industry white paper; attract more industrial branches to gather in the North Bund to form a green shipping ecosystem and help the construction of Shanghai shipping center. At the same time, we will promote the transformation of single-point cooperation in the industry to the same direction in all links of the industrial chain, strive to form a "China plan" for green shipping, actively participate in international cooperation, and enhance the international discourse.
